The Alber Residence – solar project
…is a grid connected residence located at an elevation of 7000’ overlooking Lake Tahoe. The design for this building is based on the “whole building approach” where the building and it’s systems work together to maximize efficiency. Passive and active solar PV and thermal systems were incorporated to reduce the electricity and gas usage of the building. Radiant floor heating in conjunction with solar thermal generation and storage is used for winter space conditioning and comfort. The radiant system is complimented with a forced air system for back-up winter heat and summer air circulation. In addition, the airside system will remove excess passive solar heat. A Heat exchanger is used in conjunction with the solar thermal storage system for Domestic Hot Water needs. The heating systems are backed up by a set of high efficiency boilers for use during night time and design day circumstances. Excess heat is released through the driveway during the summer months and for snow melt during the winter months. All the systems are interconnected and prioritized through a control system. Together this unique home fits the Tahoe profile as an energy efficient sustainable building
